If considering purchasing a new projecor it is now time to consider a laser projector against a conventional lamp projector.
Conventional lamp projectors typically have a lamp life up to 12,000 hours in economy mode & 6,000 hours in normal mode. This probably represents approx. 5 years of use in the typical education environment.
The projector lamp has some issues inherent to how it works. It needs to warm up to get to full brightness, it runs hot and uses power to not only run the lamp but also the several fans required to keep it cool. Another downside is that from the moment you begin using a projector lamp it starts to become less bright - this is a gradual process & possibly becomes noticeable towards the end of its life. The cost of a replacement lamp varies from €100 to €400 depending on make & model . There are environmental concerns about the mercury the lamp contains.
A laser projector on the other hand uses an led based laser light & is rated to last 20,000 hours of use, so it can run for over 12 years if its used for 8 hours a day. They are ready to go from the moment power is applied & use less energy (some are fanless). The way in which they create light allows them to produce brighter & clearer images & do not contain any mercury. Laser projectors currently cost more, but over their long lifetime they will offer considerable savings with less maintenance, energy use & no potential down time due to lamp failure.
In short, laser projectors might be more expensive to purchase, but in the long run they could be more cost efficient, depending on use.
